Looking Deeper into Photo 439

So I happened to Google the keywords "Intramuros 19th century". I don't know why I didn't think about that in the beginning while trying to confirm the photo 439 of HMS Challenger. Anyway, here's what I found.

This photo shows building on the left of the cathedral a little more clearly than the previous clues we…

the manila discovery trip

i had just read adi's post, then gary's. and looking into the photos as i think, "what should i say?". I'm not much of a writer. I can write, but i'm not as articulate and fluid with words as others. I'd rather sketch out my experience actually.. (hmm. light bulb) I am also not so reflective- I'm more of a living in the moment kind of person. But practicing these kinds of things- writing, blogging, reflecting, is a good thing for me. To recount experiences, to collect emotions thoughts, to…

SNS Challenger Manila Photo Trip: Binondo Chronicles

I don't know why I got up at 5:45 this morning. It's a holiday. But something is screaming to be written so I just have to follow the creative flow and see where it leads me.…

What beach? It's a railway line!

My first guess on picture 46606 was that it was taken near the Waterfront, looking up towards Lions Head.

But as we drove into the city centre this afternoon and looked up at the angle of Lions Head from Eastern Boulevard, it was immediately obvious that the photographer had been closer to the castle than the harbour.

We drove down Strand Street, and I watched the angle of Lions Head change in the rear-view…

So glad Table Mountain hasn't moved, because lots of other things have.

Reading the posts coming through from Manilla I find myself once again thanking Table Mountain for her presence. It does make the identification of photos easier!

And so, I went down to the Alfred basin this afternoon with my son, looking for photo 45623.

The Cape Diamond Fields

Having spoken to my Brother-in-Law about the three photos from the Challenger collection I sent him copies after digitally enhancing them in a quick and rough way. His reply to me was as follows:

Dear Claude - delighted to see these enhanced pictures of the "New

Diamond Rush" as it was known from 1871 to about 1873 before becoming

DBCM under Rhodes' control. Question: Are the original pictures that you

have enhanced in sepia, but changed by you to black & white? I ask…

Chasing Avenues in the Cape of Good Hope

Of all the pictures that I've looked at, the one that has caught my attention the most is "An Avenue : Cape of Good Hope" Most of the other pictures of the Cape of Good Hope have the mountain in the background, and it will just be a case of leg-work to triangulate the correct spot. But this…

The Energy from Collective Thinking

All journeys become interesting when you're able to share it with others who as Gary would say "have the same enthusiasm for it".

I am quite happy to say that since November 19 when I joined the SNS Challenger, 3 friends from Manila, a friend from London and a cousin from Cebu has been enthused by this endeavor and partake in the adventure with me.

Chronicling their responses encourage me and make the adventure more meaningful. It sheds light on…

Reading Mosley's Recount of Manila

I'm reading Mosley's recount of Manila and actually find some of the details very amusing. This log will attempt to describe what I think of his recount and my personal reactions to it.

It is only now that I am slowly placing myself in the shoes of the people riding HMS Challenger. They entered the Philippine shores through Zamboanga which is located at the southern provinces of the island. They went up north and passed by Basilan, Iloilo, Camiguin, Cebu and then Manila…

The Closet Artist Hops on Board

I often wondered what it would be like to just hop on board a cruise ship and go wherever the wind blows.

Over breakfast this morning I was telling my Mom about this project and how I imagine that instead of the sea, this voyage happens on the internet. I think it's a brilliant idea.

This is a great opportunity for me. Primarily because I'm a "closet artist". :) I studied music since 4 years old and went to conservatory by highschool. I took up…
