Hi Gary do you have any pages from the diaries that talk about Bye Street Canal? I'm not familiar with the name and am trying to search for what street it is probably called now.

"I went on shore one evening, but it soon got dark, that I did not see much of the town, which is lighted by oil lamps. There is a fine Cathedral, and several large Churches, and also some enormous government cigar manufactories, employing thousands of native women. Most of our men have laid in stock of, but being no great smoker, I did not go in for a bargain. The price of the very best is 8d per hundred, and you could buy the same quantity for 3d. The houses are built of stone two storys high, with flat roof and open balconies, but there is nothing pretty about the best streets, and the back ones, where the Malay and Chinese reside, were something horrible. There was a bit of a Park, full of well dressed people, for it was Sunday night, and the Millitary Bands were all playing. The ladies wear no bonnets only lace veils, and many of them smoked cigars in their carriages. Horses were plentiful, and vehicles of all descriptions were to be seen driving about the fashionable streets; Carriage exercise is the principle amusement. The natives were about the same as the other islands; they, and the Chinese seemed to be the only hard workers in the place. Altogether I think Manilla is the finest place we have visited except Lisbon, Melbourne, and Sydney, but everything is very dear there."
