On 21st March 2010, while SNS Challenger was 90 days 'at sea', the Navimag ferry (http://www.navimag.com/_portada/index.aspx) passed through the Messier Channel, Southern Chile, enroute from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. Its a 4 day journey which had began 2 days before. After passing through the Messier Channel we took a detour along the Eyre Fjord to Brüggen Glacier (also known as Pío XI Glacier). This glacier is the largest western outflow from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and is currently about 64 km in length (the longest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica). Unlike most glaciers worldwide, it advanced significantly from 1945 to 1976, surging 5 km across the Eyre Fjord, reaching the western shore by 1962 and cutting off Lake Greve from the sea. The glacier continued advancing both northward and southward in the fjord to near its present position before stabilizing. The growth covers a distance of more than 10 km north to south, adding nearly 60 square km of ice. However, here I'm not focusing on the glacier itself, but the many icebergs we passed before we arrived to it.

Below are about 20 photos of the glacier plus many icebergs of various shapes and sizes. The original HMS Challenger photos of icebergs were taken in the South Indian Ocean but I thought I'd add these photos as the Navimag followed a similar route through the Patagonian Channels as the HMS Challenger. Perhaps they went along this channel too or maybe they also saw icebergs from the same glacier. It was a spectacular sight and one of the highlights of the 4 days.
